Times file photo (click for larger version) | | September 04, 2009 The annual Affton Days Parade and Festival is ready to go for Saturday Sept. 19. This year's parade theme is: "Television: Then and Now."
Parade organizers expect to see many of the floats recreating some of the old favorite TV shows as well as some of the current favorites. The Grand Marshal will be Roche Madden, of Fox 2 News.
The parade begins at 10 a.m. at Affton High School, 8309 Mackenzie Road, and travels south on Mackenzie to Gravois, then east on Gravois to the St. George Catholic Church parking lot at Heege and Gravois.
With the music from local high school bands and the entries from various schools, churches, businesses, and organizations, the parade draws a crowd of all ages.
After the parade, the festival will officially begin a little before noon. The festival offers activities for all ages to enjoy, including food, games, inflatable rides, a climbing wall, entertainment, and a beer garden.
Terri Ems, chair of the event for the Affton Chamber of Commerce, said that changing to the new location several years ago has given a tremendous boost to the event, allowing additional space for more booths and larger crowds.
Many favorite entertainers from past years will be returning to this year's festival: Memories of Elvis by Steve Davis; juggler Jeff Koziatek; the Reptile Experience with Serengeti Steve; and the Footnotes Dance group.
A first this year, Butch Wax and the Hollywoods, a 10-piece band, will entertain from 5:30 to 9 p.m. The popular band performs great songs from the 1950s, 1960s, & 1970s. A local group, Modern Vintage, will entertain again this year from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. near the Beer Garden.
